Antique lamps - Kakiemon - A History of Harmony and Balance

Kakiemon, pronounced Ka.ki.e.mon, is a question of balance, a small range of distinctive colors (palette), pure white porcelain and a perfect eye for harmony.

In the world of art and design, color is important, in fact, of paramount importance, with many specific colors with the name of the author. The range of sublime Kakiemon enamels is a key example.

Kakiemon range of colors is small, but distinctive, delicate, balanced and in harmony. The palette is composed of red iron cerulean blue, turquoise, yellow, aubergine, and gold.

It is the appearance of red-hot iron pallet from which the story unfolds.

We must look back to Japan from the 17th century and the birth of Kizaemon Sakaida (1596-1666) the founding father of the famous family dynasty of potters in Japan.

It was Sakaida, working in the center of ceramic pottery Japanese Arita province, which, with a range of "firsts", which opened a new window to the world of ceramic art. The extremely fine, the body of a pure white (Nigoshide) was supposed to have been exclusive in the oven Kakiemon. It was undoubtedly not only a master potter, but it could "see" colors that literally, as enamels, no.

Japanese art, with its long history, has always drawn inspiration from the world of nature, with each change of season offers a new palette of colors and ideas. Goods are usually painted Kakiemon with natural subjects, birds in the branches, flying squirrels, quail "and millet", grasshoppers, butterflies and insects in the garden. Very often seen are the "Three Friends of Winter" (pine, prunus and bamboo), flowers, Leak, and banded hedges.

Human subjects are rare, and some received titles such as "Women and the Nightingale" and "Hob in the Well", a title given by England in the 18th century! Decoration based on a popular design derived from the story of a Chinese sage who saved his friend who had fallen into a big fishbowl. Chrysanthemum, the national flower of Japan, is a very common.

It was this natural world that produces its Kizaemon Sakaida "red iron" by capturing color and delicate texture red persimmon (kaki) in porcelain. It is traditionally believed to have introduced overglaze enamel of porcelain in Japan in the 1640s and in recognition of his dedication and artistic achievements, he received the honorary name of Kaki-emon, or Kakiemon.

The family remains Kakiemon porcelain decorators and qualified, until today, with only the eldest son inherits the name family and skills.

Kakiemon XIII (1906-1982) was designated as an important cultural treasure of Japan in March 1971 and Kakiemon XIV, born in 1934, the descendant of the 13th Kakiemon Sakaida, was named Living National Treasure of decorative ceramic July 2001

Kakiemon porcelain can be characterized by hexagonal or octagonal shapes. Dressing brown iron (Fuchi-Beni) was applied to the edges of porcelain Kakiemon many to beautify and protect the wheels from being chipped, white porcelain with colorless glaze, and decoration very spaced, placed with a perfect eye for harmony and balance.

The story is and always will, like the tide, incoming and out and the history of Kakiemon is not exempt.

China throughout history has not only been responsible for porcelain, but the time, the source of porcelain, but in the early 17th century, imperial China was in chaos politically, with the storm closeting years of the Ming Dynasty. The dynasty collapsed completely in 1644 and the production of porcelain for export to the West came to a halt. It would be thirty years later that the production of porcelain for export CV.

It was the Dutch, who were at the time of the power great trader of maritime trade, which, with a commercial port concession, exported large quantities of Chinese porcelain export to Europe, All products in Jingdezhen kilns great.

When production stopped, the merchant fleet has turned to Japan. Fleet Dutch merchant was the only western nation allowed to trade there and had their trading port in Deshima Island, in the port of Nagasaki. Remember that the Japan was closed to the West in an effort to contain the European influence and it is only from these designated ports that trade can take place.

In fact, Japanese porcelain production was only half a century of history before the East Indiamen Dutch arrived. It was not long before the Dutch commercial fleet, responsible for Japanese porcelain were heading for Holland. The arrival the "new" Japanese porcelain was a revelation, as very few colored porcelain was seen as most Chinese exports were blue and white goods.

It was the 17th century Japans export porcelain record high with virtually no competition. Kakiemon however, was the most valuable and certainly the most expensive and was the preferred style in the princely palaces of northern Europe, and despite the price, it was the style most sought after by the rich and famous!

But the sleeping dragon was awake, and the chaos of China has declined with the establishment of the Manchu dynasty and the long and productive reign of Emperor Kang Xi.

The kilns at Jingdezhen large were reopened and the flourishing trade of porcelain for export to the West began.

Japanese Porcelain Kakiemon with exports to Europe, became the most influential decorative ceramics in the late 17th century forms, the decorative style and an exquisite palette have been copied by all the plants the most important 18th century Europe, including Meissen, Chantilly, Chelsea, Bow, and Worcester.
