Put your apostrophes in the right places on those ubiquitous carved wooden Welcome Signs is fairly easy once you know the rules.There no greater motivation than having all these grammatical fuddy-Duddie better opinion of you, either! But before examining the rules for the use apostrophes and how his literary status has earned him the reputation I want to do one thing really clear ... I am writing this to be useful - that's all. I do not care if you get your quotes right. There are many more important things in life and nature to get on the soapbox in the world! Moreover, these things (and rules) is not written in granite!
The apostrophe has four main uses: possession, omission (contractions) plurals and phrases of time or measure, however, when it comes to knowing how best to create an identity on Home Custom Signs, we will focus on the mystery of the possessive and plural business only - time wait for no man and omissions! At the most basic, if you need to make a possessive, turn the phrase around and make one "of ..." phrase. For example: man hat = the hat of the man, or three-day journey = journey of three days. Once it was determined that you must make a possessive, the following rules to create one: Add 's to the singular form of the word (even if it ends in-s) such that the neighbor's car or a hat Louis. Add 's to the plural, which did not end in-s to, children's toys and moose whistle. Add just the 'end of plural nouns ending in-s as, terraces houses and three dogs tails. Add 's to the end of compound words as my mother-in-law comments. Finally, Add 's to the last compound nouns to show possession in common an object as Thom & Elaine house.
And of course a few exceptions (all as shocked as I am sure you are!): Some words sound awkward when an apostrophe 's' is added, like disciples of Jesus, If the form is acceptable to use only the 's' apostrophe: Jesus' disciples. Interestingly enough, this only applies to Names of the Bible or the historical significance such as Jesus, Moses, Ramses ... followers of Moses, the pyramid Ramses. Still others have clutsy not sound like the bed of the princess. Just be consistent! Although it may be noted that some "experts say something like:" ... the words ending with an s present a problem. There are two valid options in this case. It is the teaching of Jesus or the teaching of Jesus.
Elegance would seem to exclude it .... "See what I mean about being consistent! The real confusion comes when the apostrophe is used with a plural noun - the den of vipers ... More than a snake in the cave so that s' - the den of vipers! Generally speaking, if there is only one owner - add an apostrophe and "s" and if there are two or more owners - add an "S" and an apostrophe. For words that form their plural by changing the internal letters (instead of adding an "s"), as the children's table ... it is already in the plural - we do not stack! It is the same thing with words, women ... and so on. When using names ending in S, you follow the same rules as any other name and add apostrophe S: Thomas car. Plural names also follow the same rules: home Thomases' (add-es to nouns that end in S to indicate the plural). For other person whose name ends with S, you usually let your ear be your guide.
If the home of Lars's Sounds awkward, please not to omit the final S. The only rule here is that you (should) be consistent. You can not have Lars garage for two cars, then the property Lars's. In a sign of welcome - it's just not happening! ZThis whole story of Apostrophological anomalies (I can not believe I used this time!) arouses passion in some people, and there were sub-cultures formed together to push for the universal respect of the mystery of the apostrophe. I am not this body of belief, I'm just a sign, but I'm sensitive enough to obtain these things. I think all you really need to ask yourself is: "Is that my sign to refer the matter to which it is attached, Larson's Cabin? And then there is the cabin of the whole gang? In any so I do not think this is her grammar, Apostrophological!
